A devastating incident of human trafficking has claimed lives after a boat carrying illegal migrants capsized near a southern Greek island. Initial reports confirm the deaths of five Pakistani nationals, with dozens more reported missing. Rescue efforts have saved some survivors, though the total number of passengers remains uncertain.
The tragedy has prompted an outpouring of grief from Pakistan’s leadership. President Arif Alvi, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi expressed their profound sorrow over the incident and extended condolences to the victims’ families.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called for an immediate investigation, condemning human trafficking as a “heinous crime that destroys innocent lives.” He vowed to bring those responsible to justice and emphasized the need for robust measures to prevent such tragedies in the future. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has ordered a thorough probe, establishing a special inquiry committee led by the Additional Secretary for the Ministry of Interior, with a report expected within five days. The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has also been instructed to launch a nationwide crackdown on human trafficking networks.
President Alvi and Prime Minister Sharif have pledged full support to the victims’ families, highlighting the deceptive practices that lure individuals with false promises of a better future. Prime Minister Sharif stated, “Such culprits must face severe punishment, and concrete measures must be taken to prevent the recurrence of such tragedies.”
This marks the second major incident involving Pakistani migrants in Greece within 18 months, underscoring the urgent need for stricter enforcement of anti-trafficking laws. Experts have called for decisive action to dismantle trafficking networks and protect vulnerable individuals from exploitation.
