Lahore (Daily Pakistan Online) The Lahore High Court has expressed disappointment over the recent change in market timings to 10 am, without submitting a report to the court. Justice Shahid Karim, hearing petitions related to smog remediation, inquired about the basis for this decision. The Advocate General of Punjab attributed the change to the sunny weather in Lahore, similar to Islamabad. However, Justice Karim cautioned against complacency, stating that smog could return, and emphasized the need for understanding the importance of addressing smog-related issues.
The court also directed the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) to formulate a policy regarding vendors placing carts on roads, which affects traffic flow. The LDA’s lawyer assured the court that they are working on this issue. Justice Karim clarified that the court’s aim is not to harass vendors but to create convenience for them.
Furthermore, the court discussed measures to reduce pollution, including fitness inspections for vehicles every six months. The Advocate General of Punjab informed the court that points are being set up for these inspections, and vehicles will be required to display a tag indicating their fitness certificate status. Justice Karim emphasized the need to focus on motorcycles and small loaders, which are significant contributors to pollution.
The court also addressed the issue of garbage burning around the Ring Road on Sundays, directing that this practice be corrected. The hearing was adjourned until next Friday, with the court expecting progress on these matters.
