Lahore (Daily Pakistan Online) The provincial capital of Punjab, Lahore, has earned the dubious distinction of becoming the most polluted city in the world. The city’s air quality has deteriorated to alarming levels, with the air pollution rate in the city’s Bagh area recorded at a staggering 303. The Kent area, home to the US Consulate, fared no better, with an air quality index (AQI) of 519.
The situation was equally grim in other parts of the city, with the AQI in the MM Alam Road area of Gulberg recorded at 318. The city’s residents were forced to breathe toxic air, with the pollution levels exceeding safe limits by a wide margin. The poor air quality has been attributed to a combination of factors, including vehicular emissions, industrial pollution, and the burning of crop residue in the surrounding countryside.
Weather forecasters predict that the situation is unlikely to improve anytime soon, with no rain forecast for the city in the near future. The mercury is expected to rise to a high of 23 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of just 2 km per hour. The humidity level in the air has been recorded at a high of 89%, further exacerbating the pollution problem.
The smog has brought life in Lahore to a virtual standstill, with residents advised to stay indoors and avoid outdoor activities. The city’s roads are shrouded in a thick haze, reducing visibility and making it difficult for motorists to navigate. The pollution has also taken a toll on the city’s residents, with many complaining of respiratory problems and other health issues.
The government has been criticized for its failure to tackle the pollution problem, with many accusing it of not doing enough to address the issue. The authorities have been urged to take immediate action to reduce pollution levels and improve the city’s air quality.
