Islamabad (Daily Pakistan Online) Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) has thrown its weight behind the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) calls for talks with the government, while also issuing a stern warning. In a Senate meeting, JUI member Senator Maulana Abdul Wasi cautioned the government that if they were to march on Islamabad, the government’s resources would eventually run dry, but the protesters would not back down.
Maulana Abdul Wasi drew parallels between the JUI’s movement against the 2018 elections and the PTI’s current stance, suggesting that the government was employing similar tactics against the PTI as it had against the JUI in the past. He questioned the government’s sincerity in engaging in talks with the PTI, given its history of reneging on commitments. Specifically, he cited the 26th Amendment, which was passed but has yet to be implemented in its entirety, including provisions related to madrasas.
The JUI senator warned that if the government continues to disregard the rights of madrasas, it will face consequences. He also cautioned that the same fate that has befallen the PTI could await other parties, including the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).
Maulana Abdul Wasi’s statements come as JUI chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has also threatened nationwide protests over the government’s delay in issuing a notification for the Madrasa Registration Bill.
