TEHRAN (Daily Pakistan Online) In a bold response to the United Nations nuclear agency’s recent resolution, Iran has condemned the move as “unjustifiable” and announced the activation of advanced centrifuges for its peaceful atomic program. The resolution, which alleged Tehran’s poor cooperation with the agency, was passed with 19 votes in favor, 3 against, and 12 abstentions.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry and the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) released a joint statement, emphasizing that the directives to initiate the operation of advanced centrifuges are within the framework of the country’s rights and obligations under the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement.
The statement also criticized the “non-consensus” motion, approved under the “pressure and insistence” of Britain, France, Germany, and the United States. Iran’s permanent representative to the UN, Mohsen Naziri Asl, stressed that the resolution came despite “good promises” made by IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi during his recent visit to Tehran.
Iran had previously warned that any resolution against its peaceful nuclear program would be met with a quick response. The country has a history of cooperating with the IAEA, signing the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) with six world powers in 2015. However, Washington’s unilateral withdrawal in 2018 and subsequent re-imposition of sanctions have left the future of the deal uncertain.
In response to the resolution, Iran has reaffirmed its commitment to continuing cooperation with the IAEA, strictly in accordance with the Safeguards Agreement. The activation of advanced centrifuges is seen as a reciprocal response to the UN resolution, with Iran emphasizing its legitimate rights to pursue its peaceful nuclear program.
