Lahore (Daily Pakistan Online) Punjab’s Local Government Minister Zeeshan Rafiq has reaffirmed the provincial government’s commitment to prioritizing public welfare schemes, with a focus on improving water supply, sewerage, and parks facilities in cities. Speaking at a seminar organized by the Punjab Intermediate Cities Improvement Investment Program (PICIIP), Rafiq emphasized that the government is dedicated to revitalizing public improvement schemes, which have gained momentum under the incumbent administration.
The minister expressed satisfaction with the progress of various municipal schemes in cities like Sahiwal, Sargodha, Bahawalpur, and Rawalpindi, made possible with the support of the Asian Development Bank. He highlighted the “Developing Resilient Environment and Advancing Municipal Services (Dreams-I)” project, which aims to enhance the standard of living in these cities. Additionally, Rafiq announced that a substantial investment of Rs 3203 million is being made in water supply schemes under the PICIIP, alongside upgrades to trunk main sewer lines and the installation of wastewater plants.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s vision for a modernized Punjab is rooted in embracing innovative solutions, moving beyond traditional bureaucratic approaches. Rafiq stressed the importance of digitization in driving holistic changes, warning that failure to adapt will leave the province lagging behind. The minister also underscored the need to overhaul the outdated system of approving schemes, emphasizing the importance of plugging loopholes and prioritizing public betterment.
Rafiq highlighted CM Maryam Nawaz’s flagship initiative, the Suthra Punjab program, aimed at establishing a comprehensive solid waste management system that will benefit both urban and rural areas. He acknowledged the crucial role of PICIIP in promoting well-planned growth and improving the quality of life for Punjab’s residents, expressing gratitude for the Asian Development Bank’s support in this endeavor.
