Karachi (Daily Pakistan Online) The World Bank has issued a stark warning about the far-reaching consequences of climate change, stating that it poses a significant threat to the lives and livelihoods of approximately 1.2 billion people worldwide. According to the World Bank’s latest report on climate change, extreme weather events such as heatwaves, tidal waves, floods, storms, and droughts are expected to have a devastating impact on communities globally.
The report emphasizes that climate change is intricately linked to economic development and that building resilience to its effects is crucial. Notably, the report suggests that a 10% increase in per capita GDP could reduce the number of people most affected by climate change by approximately 100 million. This underscores the need for tailored policies that address the unique challenges faced by each country.
The World Bank’s Senior Managing Director, Axel van Trotsenburg, highlighted that while every country is vulnerable to climate change, the world’s poorest countries are disproportionately affected. In response to this pressing issue, the World Bank has incorporated progress on climate action into its new corporate scorecard for the first time. Furthermore, the organization has been identifying climate risks and potential solutions in over 60 countries through its country climate and development reports.
