Karachi (Daily Pakistan Online) Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Yahya Afridi, has formed a sub-committee to review the prisons in Sindh and prepare a comprehensive reform package. This development comes after an important meeting on prison reforms was held at the Supreme Court Karachi Registry, chaired by Justice Afridi. The meeting was attended by prominent figures, including the Chief Justice of Sindh High Court, Inspector General of Sindh Police, and Barrister Haya Iman Zahid.
The primary objective of the meeting was to identify and develop a joint strategy to address the pressing issues plaguing the prisons in Sindh. Justice Afridi emphasized the need to treat prisoners with humanity and in accordance with the law. He also stressed the importance of prioritizing cases pending for prisoners for over three years.
The sub-committee, headed by Justice (retd) Irshad Ali Shah, with Barrister Haya Iman Zahid as the coordinator, aims to address the problems faced by prisoners, introduce vocational training and educational programs, and develop a strategy for the reintegration of prisoners into society after their release. Recommendations will also be made for implementing successful models in other provinces.
Addressing the staff of the Karachi Registry, Justice Afridi directed that the problems of prisoners coming to the court should be resolved efficiently and politely. He emphasized the need to treat prisoners with respect and warned of strict action on complaints of misconduct. The Chief Justice also directed the Registrar Supreme Court to visit the branch registry to resolve staff-related issues.
