Islamabad (Daily Pakistan Online) Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) and the country’s aviation sector have suffered a staggering loss of over 450 billion rupees due to travel restrictions imposed in recent years. According to sources within the Privatization Commission, PIA alone has incurred a loss of approximately 220 billion rupees over the last four and a half years.
The ban on European routes has further exacerbated the situation, with civil aviation losing an additional 250 billion rupees. However, there is a glimmer of hope on the horizon. The restoration of European routes is expected to be a significant milestone in PIA’s privatization process. In fact, sources suggest that PIA’s European and UK routes are likely to be reinstated soon.
Furthermore, talks are underway for the sale of PIA under the GTOG (Government-to-One- Government) agreement as part of the airline’s privatization plans. This development is expected to bring much-needed investment and reforms to the ailing national carrier. As the country’s aviation sector continues to grapple with the challenges posed by travel restrictions, the restoration of European routes and the potential sale of PIA offer a beacon of hope for a brighter future.
