In a historic move, the International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Minister of Military Affairs Yoav Gallant. The warrants are for crimes against humanity and war crimes committed in the Gaza Strip from October 8, 2023, to May 20, 2024 ¹.
The ICC’s Pre-Trial Chamber I rejected Israel’s appeals challenging its jurisdiction and decided to release the arrest warrants due to ongoing conduct similar to that addressed in the warrant. Netanyahu and Gallant are accused of bearing criminal responsibility for war crimes, including starvation as a method of warfare, and crimes against humanity, such as murder, persecution, and other inhumane acts ¹.
All 124 states that signed the Rome Statute are obligated to arrest the wanted individuals and hand them over to the ICC. The Netherlands has already expressed its willingness to enforce the warrants, while 93 nations have reiterated their support for the ICC
